Tuesday's Tips for Preppers - Misc. Tips - Part 5

It’s time once again for some more preppin’ tips. Tuesday comes around pretty regular, usually every week. Hopefully you will find these tips helpful.

Preppin’ Tip # 1 – Tool Tip

With winter just around the corner, there’s a good chance you may be shoveling snow out of your drive-way soon. Make it a task that’s a little bit easier by spraying WD-40 or similar type lubricant on the blade of your shovel. This will make it a lot easier to shovel all that snow.

Preppin’ Tip # 2 – Fuel Tip

Most chainsaws use two-cycle oil mixtures. Remember to give your fuel can with the oil and gas mixture a “gentle” shake before re-filling your chainsaw’s fuel tank. Your chainsaw will thank you.

Preppin’ Tip # 3 – Winter Safety Tip

Keep a 30 to 50 foot line or rope in the vehicle. If you get stranded and have to leave your vehicle for any reason, tie one end of the rope to a door handle (or some other part of your vehicle) and the other end to yourself. If you get disoriented or blinded by heavy snowfall, you can always find your way back.

Preppin’ Tip # 4 – Food Conservation Tip

Leftover tomato sauce or tomato paste doesn’t last very long after opening (usually a day, maybe two), even after being placed in the refrigerator. Simply pour some liquid cooking oil on top of your leftover tomato sauce or paste and it will keep for a couple of weeks if refrigerated. Simply pour the cooking oil off when you are ready to use your sauce.

Preppin’ Tip # 5 – Cooking Tip

We’ve all done it at some time or another! We burned the rice because we got busy with something else. Don’t throw it away. Salvage it! Get rid of the burnt smell and taste! Place the heel from a loaf of bread on top of the rice, cover and then let it sit 8 to 10 minutes. The bread will absorb the burnt smell and allow you to use the majority of your rice. Use care when taking your salvaged rice out of the pan. Be careful not to mix the good rice on top with the burnt rice on the bottom. You will still have to discard the burnt portion at the bottom of the pan.

Making life easier a few tips at a time!

Another tool tip;

After honing the cutting edge of a tool,..place duct tape on the newly sharpened edge if it will not be used for a while,....makes it safer and keeps it sharp

I love these tips, RW. Great stuff. I'm off to put some oil on the top of my tomato paste right now...

Tip#4 is really quite simple wnen you think about it. It just seals the moisture and the air out but doesn't harm the sauce.Moisture and air is what spoils so many leftovers and the fridge takes care of the temperature. Thanks.

Sometimes the best solutions are also the easiest to overlook. Thanks

I love these tips! I've been telling everyone about the oil on the tomato paste one especially, and the one on rice is wonderful, too. I enjoy your "stealth links," (was surprised to find myself that one in the olive oil post led back to mine--thanks!) and am always learning a lot from the information you provide. It is much appreciated.

If you don't have a heel, you can use the crust. Heels work better because they aren't as porous and won't let the burnt odors through but rather absorbs it.

The tomato paste (or sauce) tip will keep your sauce fresh for up to a couple of weeks, long enough to use in another recipe.

Congratulations! You've been "Stealthed"!
