For a defensive shotgun, simplicity and reliability are the most important factors. There are several shotgun accessories which can provide the law abiding citizen with an advantage in a home defense situation. These accessories can be added without adversely affecting the simplicity and reliability of your shotgun.
One of the accessories you may want to consider for your shotgun for home defense purposes is a butt cuff. This is a shotgun shell carrier that fits on the buttstock of a shotgun and carries extra shells in 12, 16 or 20 gauge. These are usually made of black nylon and elastic to fit all standard shotgun stocks. Unfortunately they will not fit folding stocks.
A butt cuff which attaches to the shotgun’s stock will conveniently store additional shotgun shells. The shells can then be quickly pulled from the butt cuff and loaded into the shotgun in a “tactical reload.” Additionally, the extra weight from the butt cuff will slightly reduce the recoil of the shotgun. Adding a butt cuff is a simple way to give you an advantage in a home defense situation. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to install on your shotgun.

It is also good to remember that the single most important thing is practice. Take your shotgun to the shooting range, the farm, or out in the country and fire it regularly. Get comfortable using your shotgun, and become accustomed to the amount of recoil and noise it produces. The above accessory will be helpful, but is not a substitute for skill. Skill only comes through practice, practice and more practice.
