DIY De-humidifier for Your Gun Storage - Update

A couple of readers have left excellent tips for a DIY de-humidifier for your gun storage.
Here are a couple of excellent tips!

That's one way to do it, however I use this method.
1. Container with plastic lid or Mason jar and just the ring.
2. 1 coffee filter
3. Silica gel from hobby store

Place gel in container and cover top with coffee filter. Place ring on Mason jar or cut center out of plastic lid and put on container. The filter lets moisture in and keeps the gel from spilling out.

BTW, any hygroscopic material will work. Silica gel is effective, but I might use pickling lime in a pinch instead of chalk.

Here is another one Riverwalker.

Take 1 pair of clean gym socks, fill half way with fresh uncooked white rice.....tie off the ends,..pitch into the bottom of the gun safe/closet... Very cheap and you should already have the rice on hand. This lasts about 8 months before it needs to be dumped out and sun dried to recharge.

Thanks R.E.A.L! Thanks gott_cha!

Staying above the water line!

I have read your blog for awhile now and appreciate all the information that you provide. I, like many Americans, am feeling the need to purchase firearms before January, but have no experience doing so. Can you shed some light on shotguns? I would like to purchase at least a couple, but have heard that there is price-gauging in some areas. Do you know a price range that I should expect to pay (I know there would be fluctuation according to area) and which brands are trustworthy? Thank you for any information you can provide.

Mossberg makes one of the most reliable shotguns out there. A new Mossberg 500A in 12 gauge runs around $250, while a Maverick 12 gauge runs $200 or less in most areas. The 500A model allows you to shoot 2 3/4 inch or 3 inch magnum shells. Most Mossberg models also have interchangeable barrels as acessories. This allows you to upgrade for different hunting purposes by only purchasing a different barrel which can usually be changed out quickly and the need for tools to do so. The Mossberg 500A I have has the 18 1/2 inch barrel which is the legal limit and works good for home defense. It will also shoot slugs which can give you additional range of up to approximately 100 yards. I think for the money they are probably the best way to go. Go to my gear page and check the gun posts to see if any of the other information might help you in making a decision about which direction you want to go. Thanks.

BTW, I buy almost all my firearms from Academy Sports and Outdoors - good prices, good service, and good selection.

Thanks for your quick response and the referral to your gear page--that will likely be helpful in more ways than just firearms. This info helps a lot, so thanks again.

You may want to check out hte post on the Marlin 336 .30/.30 rifle with the special scope set-up for different size shooters.

The additional eye relief possible with that set-up may help if you have neck problems.

Sorry I didn't answer your response sooner. Had to go in to work for a few hours.

The phrase you want is DE-humidifier.

A humidfier ADDS moisture to air - not what is desired in this case.

I messed up on that one! I meant DE-humifier.

Thanks, I didn't catch that goof up!
