Sunday's Survival Tips - Deep-Frying Safety Guidelines

Any time a large quantity of hot cooking oil is being used to cook food there can be major safety concerns for you and your family. With the Thanksgiving holiday being only a short time off, a few general safety guidelines will help you survive the Thanksgiving holiday without any major problems. A safe holiday is happy holiday!

DEEP-FRYING SAFETY GUIDELINES

1.) Always use the proper equipment and follow all manufacturer guidelines.

2.) Read and understand the instructions for your equipment before use. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice if it’s your first time to fry a turkey.

3.) Make sure all utensils and equipment (fry basket, thermometer, etc.) which may come into contact with hot oil is kept free of any moisture. Any moisture on your utensils will cause the hot oil to splatter. This could create the potential for serious burns to you or a member of your family.

4.) Remember, large food items (like a turkey) can be very difficult to handle and when combined with hot oil can quickly become a dangerous combination. If you need assistance, it is always safer to wait until additional help is available.

5.) NEVER leave hot oil unattended! This is probably one of the most dangerous things you can do when deep-frying.

6.) Keep your kids and the pets away from the area at all times!

7.) Use heavy duty aprons, gloves and potholders when working around hot oil. This will afford a small amount of protection from accidental burns that may be caused by grease splatters.

8.) Always have resources available to extinguish any fires. Keep your deep-frying activities well away from any flammable objects or materials.

9.) Make sure your oil has cooled completely before it is disposed of or transferred to a storage container.

10.) Never pour hot oil directly from a large cooking pot. This can be an extremely dangerous thing.

Remember, safety is NO accident!

Staying above the water line!

We sometimes fry up a mess of fish or oysters, depending on who's cooking!

Deep frying locks in flavor and develops great texture in cooking. However many people avoid deep fried foods, due to the fear of many health problems that become a part of life within a fraction of years. I would like to share a few tips. Choose your cooking oil carefully. Use oils, that have high, 'smoke points' or those which do not break down at deep frying temperatures. Use canola oil for frying as it is low in saturated fat, has a high burning point, and does not detract the flavor of the food. Peanut oil, corn oil, rice bran oil, sunflower oil are also good choices.
