Fire
Fire can be both friend and foe. When safely and properly utilized, it can provide warmth when it's cold, a means to cook our food and the ability to banish the uncertainty of darkness. Fire can also have a devastating effect if not properly controlled. It can eliminate years of hard work in a heartbeat or cause injuries that can affect you for the rest of your life. It may even cause death.
Fire is a powerful and necessary tool that should always be treated with respect. A healthy respect for the power of fire will make it's use safer for everyone.

This is actually pecan wood which is great for cooking and providing heat. It was being used to make some coals to grill some burgers on the pit for a family get together.
Pecan wood is a very dense wood similar to hickory which is its cousin. Pecan wood actually wins a lot of BBQ championships. It’s hard to get a fire started and you need to use some kindling to make it easier to get it going.
Pecan is also one of the cleanest types of wood you can burn. When it’s burning properly there is very little popping and crackling. It makes great coals for a pit. It burns for a very long time and has an extremely high heat output when compared to mesquite or oak.
While I use all three types of wood for grilling, pecan wood puts off a good aroma and smoke that isn’t too intense and is tolerated better by people who have trouble eating grilled or smoked food.
The only real problem with pecan wood is that it is difficult to split and you’ll need a hydraulic splitter. Don’t even waste your time trying to split it by hand. We usually just burn the logs without splitting it. Just use a little cedar for kindling.
It usually isn't hard to collect enough dead wood from the pecan trees on my property to get a nice fire going. Plus it helps to keep the pests in check and any bugs in the dead wood get burned up and a re less of a threat to the trees.
