Survival Kit Essentials - The Sewing Kit

A very useful item that doesn’t require a lot of space but will come in extremely handy is a small sewing kit. It’s a great item for those little repairs that may be needed. As a bonus, you will have a needle handy to dig out those pesky little splinters and stickers that seem to render your hands useless or can disable your feet entirely. Add a couple of large safety pins and you’ll also have an expedient fish hook! Small sewing kits are inexpensive and compact. Many cost less than a dollar or can even be obtained for free.

Need stitches?

Staying above the water line!

Great post RW. I have a good size sewing kit in my BOB. I'm sure it would come in handy.

A lot of the old camping books mentioned having a small 'possibles' repair kit of some type - the sewing kit was nearly always mentioned in them.

Maybe a good topic for a post would be an 'Altoids' size box of repair items needed / wanted? I'm sure quite a few of us could make some suggestions for a nice kit.

I always seem to need a needle or safety pin to get out splinters. It seems they often go right through a pair of gloves and a thorn or sticker embedded in your foot can cause a world of hurt. Thanks.

Small and seemingly insignificant items can sometimes be the best thing to have when needed. A prime example being the "safety" pin! Thanks.

Do you know if you can use regular thread to suture wounds? I was under the impression you could only use certain materials or your body would try to fight the foreign matter.

I guess it wouldn't matter short term, but I wonder if fishing line would be better for long term suturing.

btw, great blog, great tips, and thanks for posting regularly. It really keeps me coming back. Keep up the good work.

Like toe and fingernail clippers, a tweezer and small knife, the simple things not often used can be the most important.
Keep it up- you're inspiring.

For minor wounds there is a liquid bandage that can be used on small cuts, it's a sterile form of super glue suitable for closing small cuts. You can also use butterfly bandages to help close smaller wounds. Anything major and you'd better see a doctor quick, I know they show people stitching wounds in the movies all the time...you just need to remember that they are actors and it's not real. Improper wound care in real life can cause more problems than it will solve.

Simple things are often taken for granted. Thanks for the nice comment.

If you want to suture wounds, it is best done with a curved needle. And make sure you study wound care first. Suturing isn't like putting a band-aid on.

My wife actually has one of those survival kits. Believe me it's come in real handy. there have been times where we've gone on vacations and found that a seem has come undone on her dress or one of my suits.
