One of the items that get used almost as much as my knife is a shovel. It's the best way to dig a hole and the best way to dig yourself out of one. A folding shovel for your pack, a plain camp shovel, a spade shovel, a scoop shovel or a "sharpshooter" will all come in handy for an emergency, as well as a multitude of little jobs around the house or the farm.
Can you dig it?

You're right RW. Shovels are very handy for a number of projects.

I have found the small bladed "sharpshooter" can boost one's confidence if sharpened razor sharp all around, and carried in a sheath (collapsed cardboard box) in the back of the truck, or in the trunk or back seat of a car. Few people would want to mess with one used as a bayonet on a rifle. If the police stop you for any reason, it is just a shovel, right ?
Excellent advice - have several designs, from military folding patterns, to square tip and round tip designs. If you have to move dirt or other loose contents, shovels are indispensible.
Anonymous, I carry one of those CS Spetnatz shovels with that same edge treatment with just those reasons in mind in my truck as well. Makes a decent machete for brush lane cutting, or even impromptu hatchet when making a fire.

I've got almost as many shovels as I do blades.

Always a good idea to keep a sharp edge on your shovel...makes a great improvised machete of hatchet or in your case a VERY large bayonet! Thanks.

I actually have separate shovels that I carry in my vehicles (the short camp-type shovels)that I keep a good edge on with a file.
I also have my "yard" shovels that I keep handy in various places.
My neighbor lady has her shovel handy to fight off the "hairy mygalomorphs" that wander from my yard into hers!LOL
