Guns and Gear - The Holster

The proper gear to go with your firearms is always an essential part of responsible gun ownership. With the proper gear, your firearms will last longer and experience fewer problems. This is important if your pistol is needed quickly and yet the proper gear allows you to keep your firearm protected.

I recently acquired a Taurus 9mm pistol and then managed to do a little trading and got an excellent gun storage case for the pistol. The main problem is that, even though it works to protect my pistol, the case doesn’t allow the really quick access that may be needed in an emergency. Fortunately, I obtained a fairly nice nylon holster for less than $10 with a quick release hold down strap and a pouch to hold an extra magazine. I just need to obtain an additional magazine for the pistol and I’ll be good to go. I won’t have to worry about accessing it quickly and the pistol will still have a good measure of protection.

A good holster for your pistol will allow a decent measure of protection for your firearm when it’s out of the case and allow you the needed access that may be required depending upon the situation.

Got holster?

I have a similar holster for my 9mm and it carries well on my hip. Uncle Mike's holsters are very good quality.

It's unreal how the movies and TV show pistols being thrown into glove compartments, etc. It'd be a wonder they worked at all if I treated mine that way. Thanks.

And getting one that FITS your particular model is important as well. Used to be that holsters were made in quite a few models, but hardly anymore, at least by and large. The holsters in my cases you find are generic 'fits these guns' and a whole list of guns that will indeed fitit. But the gun moves around sloppily around, removing finish and possibly loose enough to lose the gun entirely. I think I'd rather go semi-custom and pay the extra for something that FITS that specific gun.

Also, check to see if holster will manipulate controls while encased. My Dad had bought a Buckmark holster for his Buckmark, but the holster was tight enough to where the button magazine release was easily pushed in, possibly losing the magazine - not good.

Got a holster about like that one too. Nothing like being able to keep your heater handy.

Great advice on checking to make sure there aren't any issues with the fit that could be a problem. Thanks for the great advice.

True many holsters are generic and they use one size to fit several different models. This is one of those but hopefully I'll be able to come across a custom fit holster in the future at a reasonable price.

I initially had a generic nylon holster for my .357 S&W Magnum pistol but recently came across a custom fit leather holster that I now use instead.

Thanks my friend! It does help to keep things handy, especially if you find yourself in a bad situation all of a sudden.

I didn't mean to sound like I am hatin' on the generic holster makes. I have a few and they do the job. Uncle Mikes in particular.

I was just trying to point out to carefully check to see if potential problems are there, while you still have receipt handy and can return it. Many holsters can be lived with, but some can't - I have a few extra holsters because of this, so my learning the hard way may spare others.

No problem! Your point was well taken and a very good one indeed. I too have the "this sure looks good but doesn't work worth a darn" problem with gear also and any insight from others is greatly appreciated. I had to run and check to make sure I didn't have the "hitting the mag release button" problem with my holster after you mentioned the problem. Found out I was OK in this area, thank goodness! Your advice is welcome anytime...hopefully we can save a few people from having problems with their gear. Thanks a bunch!
