Sources for Survival Seeds

With the gardening season about to start up, now is a good time to make sure you have the necessary seeds for that garden. Even if you aren’t planning a garden this year, it won’t hurt to stock up on some seeds just in case.

Here are a few links for heirloom seeds:

Amishland Heirloom Seeds

Here is a link to a seed exchange program that you may find helpful.

You will also need to make sure you store your seeds properly. If you are buying additional seeds for long term storage, you can find additional information here:

Another great post RW!
I alway's save the seed's from the thing's I buy at the store, had pretty good luck with them. Just started planting some cantalope, got way too many pepper's. I read an article a week or so ago about how the indian's taught the pilgrim's to grow french intensive style. They'd plant corn, bean's and squash in between each other. The corn made a pole for the bean's to climb, the squash shaded the soil for water retention! Pretty inventive!

I ordered from the baker creek catalog. Some good stuff in there. But, a lot of it was imported wacky seeds that one should not depend on. Sure they look neat & strange but that's it. I'd like to have gotten more out of it than the seeds I'm gonna order from'em.

I'll check out the other sites you mentioned! Thanks & great post.

Unfortunately, a lot of seed places I've seen are like that. It would be nice if you could get everything you need at one place.
Thanks.

The number of Heirloom Seeds available at most stores Is surprising if you know the names to look for.

The Dollar General has a lot of .10 cent seed packs in the Spring and many of them are old time things. Same with Wally World and others.

I'd encourage folks to read that link on storing seed. I've had good luck germinating 10 year old seed w/o being that conscientious in the past. It really pays to take care of it and store it right. I keep mine in paper bags inside a coffee can w/ the lid on it, in a place that's as cool and dry as possible. I don't have the space in the fridge for them all.

Found some of those 10 cent seed specials at the dollar stores in my area also. Just have to keep an eye out for bargains. Thanks.
