Simple Food Storage Items - Bouillon Cubes - Update

A reader brought up a very good point about bouillon cubes. Many contain MSG, also known as monosodium glutamate, that can pose a health hazard for people that have a sensitivity to this food additive.

Hey RW, Everyone should always READ FIRST what is in the bouillon cubes before purchasing. Many of them have MSG--called a flavor enhancer. It does enhance flavor, but it isn't good for your health. MSG can cause headaches and many other problems. There are bouillon cubes without MSG--readers should look for and purchase that variety.

Good post, RW. I buy and use bouillon cubes, but I'm cautious.

The potato trick is a good one!

Many people have a concern about the presence of MSG (monosodium glutamate) that many bouillon cubes contain. Unfortunately, this is a problem for many food items other than bouillon cubes.

Even when a product says “no MSG added” it may contain the substance because so many common ingredients found in a variety of foods, such as autolyzed yeast, sodium casseinate, enzymes, hydrolyzed pea proteins and others, contain or give off free glutamic acid during the food manufacturing process.

While these may be found in only trace amounts and will have little or no effect on the average person, for those with sensitivity to MSG or those that suffer a more severe allergic reaction, it is a real and serious concern.

Make sure to read and understand all the ingredients to make sure you will be able to avoid any food sensitivity problems.

Thanks Patricia for your helpful reminder!

Staying above the water line!

Well, I went and grabbed my bouillon and found out it does have MSG. I'll check before I buy next time, so I appreciate the head's up. Thanks for the update and the original post--love the potato tip!

If you over salt your water when making pasta, the potato thing will help. Thanks.
