Common Food Storage Mistakes - Providing for Pets

Many people when planning their food storage forget to provide adequate supplies for their pets. Your pets will need food and water in the event of an emergency. Make sure to include adequate supplies to meet the needs of your pets.

Your pets may also need special medications in addition to food and water. They may also need some form of portable shelter, bedding materials and harnesses or leashes. It is easier to have these items ahead of time in the event of an emergency.

You may also have other types of pets with special needs such as birds or fish in an aquarium. The main thing to remember is to keep those items you will need to properly care for your pets available at all times and in sufficient quantities should necessary pet supplies become scarce in a disaster or emergency situation.

Remember, your pets depend upon you as much as you depend on them. Don’t forget to include their needs as part of your food storage program.

Staying above the water line!

You are right, people don't often plan for that. I have Barkley chow sealed tight in special containers as well as my own grain and food stores. Water for him as well.

Hopefully I'll never have to use them, but I can see him looking up from his dry stuff and saying "hey Mom, how about some that tasty nitrogen packed barley you got there?"

I could never look into my Lab's e big sad eyes and tell them I forgot about having food and a warm place for them.

BTW, Some of the food stuff on your sight are real killers! I wonder sometimes how effective those "killer" recipes of yours are? LOL

Thanks for the reminder. It made me think I ought to have a tupperware with pet food in my 72 hour kit. If we had to leave the house in a hurry I'm sure we would bring our cat and dog.

Try not to leave your pet preparations to the last minute. You don't want to forget something while in a hurry. Thanks.

Great tip! There are a lot of things we eat that dogs can't.

My dog will eat almost anything. But I always keep some extra dog food on hand.

Is there a list of foods that are poison for dogs?

There are numerous foods that are dangerous to pets but I don't think I've ever seen a list anywhere. I was planning to do something of that nature in a post.
Once I get past the holidays, I'll try to put something together.
