The Plan

The plan is to get a Mossberg 500 12 gauge pump shotgun. My son's offered to take me shopping to get what I want for Father's Day / Birthday. I've done a little research and they seem to be pretty reliable. Anybody out there that's got one or has some experience with shotguns, please let me know what you think about them or if I should look for something else to buy. Any recommendations for type and amount of ammo would also help. Thanks.

Mossberg 500, excellent shotgun. I bought mine for $250 and Mossberg has a truly deserved reputation.

Its a good choice,..not top of the line but not bottom shelf either,...if you go with the full stock check out the add-ons available from advanced technology http://atigunstocks.com/

I would say to get a full stock, full tube pump shotgun. I have never used a Mossberg but they have a loyal following. I have been a Wingmaster guy for 35 years and love the hell out of 'em. But both guns have dual slides and that is what makes the world go around.

I have a couple Wingmasters. One is a standard 2&3/4" chamber and the other is a 3" chamber. Both work like Swiss watches, at least the kind of Swiss watches they used to make.

Buy 00 Buck and bird shot in vast quantities. Buy special sizes as you see the need. A couple of Tweety Birds will greatly add to your protein uptake if cooked for a good bit with your beans. The 00Buck will take care of most things that go bump in the dark. No man in his right mind wants to charge a load of 00 Buck. Best home defense round known to man.

The only real problem I ever had with mine was the shell ejector not wanting to grip the shell and eject it. The pieces looked worn so I just replaced them and it was fine.
I did buy it used so I have no idea how many rounds had gone through it.

I saw one at Academy last night, and despite owning a police synthetic 870, I was tempted because of the price. For the money it is a great shotgun, and all the reviews are glowing. The Military uses a variant of the 500 series for combat. They cost a little extra. FYI the model 500 I saw was a 12 gauge 6-7 shot black synthetic stock for about 179 bucks.

Looks like a nice gun. All I can say is that my (Dad's old)Mossy at 32 years old still shoots fine.

I have used Mossberg 500's for many years. Lost my first one in a house fire along with all my other guns & the first gun I bought was another 500. I did get it with a extra barrel for slugs. The other barrel is ribbed with changeable choke tubes.
I bought my first one because of the thumb safety as I was a brake action shooter before.
The only criticism I have is it is a bit light for the trap range.
