Comfort Foods for Survival

Stuffed Japenos Wrapped in Bacon

Comfort foods will generally trigger a positive emotional response about your physical well-being. This positive effect can be vitally important in a survival situation. Anything that can help to bring about a positive response to an otherwise negative situation will be invaluable in a crisis.

Various cultures have used different comfort foods foods to fight off the stress brought about during trying times. Some comfort foods may have a sentimental value of a personal nature, a purely physical appeal to the taste buds of the individual or they may simply be a convenient food item for quick and easy consumption.

Individual tastes vary and there are numerous food items that will qualify as comfort food depending upon individual preferences. One thing that comfort foods have in common is the response from your body. While not only triggering a positive emotional response, comfort foods, depending upon the type ingested, may also trigger a release of  hormones by your body that could possibly cause your body to kick into the "fat storage" mode.

Many comfort foods characteristically have traditionally higher content when it comes to fat and calories. Jump starting your body's "fat storage" mode can have a significant benefit for your survival. Even though supplies of comfort foods may be relatively small in many cases, you can use them to fool your body into thinking everything is normal and work to prevent your body from kicking into "starvation mode".

Comfort foods are important not only for the positive mental effects they can have but they can also create a positive response from your body that will be important in a survival situation. It could be anything from a slice of apple pie, a piece of chocolate or a crispy strip of bacon. Whatever your choice for comfort foods, it should be one that will have a positive effect on you both mentally and physically.

Got bacon?

  1. Hmmm - stuffed peppers wrapped in bacon...awesome! Also awesome is bacon-wrapped chunks of chicken!

  2. We've got Just Add Water packs made up of mashed potatoes for our comfort foods. Complete with salt, pepper, bacon bits, potato buds, dehydrated onions and garlic. Just add boiling water, and wait a couple of minutes.

    HUGE mental benefits.

  3. Bacon goes with everything, when those dollar stores had cooked bacon zip lock pouches, I used to keep them handy in the truck (they didn't last long enough to spoil, lol). You got a little hungry on the road, a mouth full of bacon kept me very happy and held me until I got home or my destination!

One of my kids uses Cherrios cereal in a ziplock bag. A little dusting of cinammon and he is happy.

  4. Oh, yeah, bacon is great.
I appreciate the mention of comfort food because I do believe it's important. On the other hand, it needs to be kept in the proper perspective. At the risk of sounding like a scold, don't store a lot of junk food. It's not good nutritionally or healthful in the long run.

I always feel better after having ingested some bacon...it may not be the best thing for my arteries but it sure leaves you with a good feeling.

    Thanks.

Baked potato with the works ranks right up there with bacon...

The main goal is to eat something you like to create a positive mental effect...problems won't be so overwhelming afterwards.

    Thanks Chief Instructor.

Lil' RW's favorite is those Honey Nut Cheerios...eats them like candy.

It's amazing that there are so many simple food items that can leave us feeling better about ourselves and our situation.

    Thanks anon.

    Don't forget the chocolate!

Buy it by the 5lb bag at COSTCO and then vacuum seal in ball jars.
