Food intolerances are caused by the inability of the body to digest certain foods. Lactose intolerance, caused by a sugar found in milk and other dairy products is one of the most common food intolerances suffered by a large number of people. It is of the utmost importance for people to learn about the foods that they may have trouble tolerating in their diet. It may be necessary to limit or entirely eliminate these products from your diet, depending upon the severity of your reaction to certain foods. It is also important for people suffering from food intolerance to learn about specific foods they can use as substitutes.
Although there are many symptoms associated with lactose intolerances, the most common symptoms are nausea, gas, cramps, and diarrhea. Many times a person with lactose intolerance can learn the quantity and type of foods containing lactose they may consume in their diet without causing problems. It is also possible to learn which foods should be avoided. It is also possible to get the needed amounts of calcium from other products.
Food Items with Low Lactose Levels:
1. Reduced lactose milk – This has most of the nutritional benefits of regular whole milk.
2. Cheese, yogurt, and ice cream contain calcium while having somewhat lower lactose levels.
Substitute Non-Dairy Food items with Calcium
1. Soy milk
2. Broccoli
3. Sardines and salmon
With a little “trial and error “, you can avoid the problems caused by lactose intolerance through limited consumption of problem foods or by substituting foods that will still allow you to get needed vitamins and nutrients.
Your health is always important for your survival!

Good information to have, with a great link. It's good to know some alternatives for calcium if an intolerance shows up--I had thought about other allergies developing (like to wheat) but this hadn't occured to me. Thanks for the info!

The wife has some problems with lactose intolerance, but it is mainly due to eating cheese-drinking milk doesn't seem to bother her any.
That's great! Thanks.

Thank you for bringing this issue out to the survivalist community. I personally am hyper-lactose intolerant. Basically i cannot ingest anything with any little bit of lactose in it without at least minimal reprecussions, usually more than minimal, usually leaving me curled up on the couch in the fetal position in a lot of pain. This is a severe issue to any survivalist looking to store prepackaged food. Almost all prepackaged food has some level of lactose in it, usually as a filler. The only way i can store food is if i buy it fresh, and prepare it for storage myself. MRE's? Not a chance. Canned or freeze dried food? Not bloody likely. Lactose reduced milk, nope. Potato chips, nope. Most medications, nope. Granola bars, nope. Magarine, nope. Even most brands of soy cheese have milk in them! One in four people in the word are lactose intolerant to a degree. Long term storage food companies (as well as normal food companies and drug companies) need to get this into their heads! Remove the lactose, increase your customer based by 300%!

Food intolerance is such a huge problem that it often doesn't get mentioned. Food allergies is also a problem area that I have yet to address. Thanks.
