Save some money and make your own vegetable and fruit wash. Make your food safe and your family safer by washing and cleaning your produce properly. Here's how to make your own fruit and vegetable wash.
The acetic acid in distilled white vinegar kills bacteria and helps to dissolve the wax coatings and pesticide residues found on the skins of many fruits and vegetables. This is cheaper than commercial brands found in the stores. It also cleans better than just using water all by itself. There is an added bonus in that this spray wash is all natural.
Hard-skinned Fruits and Vegetables:
1. Fill a spray bottle with equal parts of distilled white vinegar and water.
2. Then spray the solution onto your fruits and vegetables; rub it in; and rinse with water.
3.) For extremely hard skinned vegetables, such as potatoes, a small scrub brush may be required to properly clean your vegetables and fruit.
Soft-skinned Fruits and Vegetables:
1. Fill a bowl with equal parts white vinegar and water.
2. Then, soak your fruits and vegetables in the solution for a minute or two, and then rinse with water.
3.) The leftover vegetable wash solution should be discarded afterwards.
Tips
1.) Use a scrub brush to work the solution into hard skinned vegetables and fruit.
2.) Use a soft bristle toothbrush on softer fruits and vegetables.
3.) Store your fruit and vegetable wash out of the reach of children.
4.) Always properly label the contents of any spray bottles.
5.) Clean and deodorize your cutting board by sprinkling it with baking soda and then scrub it with a little full strength vinegar. Rinse with water and it's ready to go!
Staying above the water line!

SO much better than the commercial sprays, which probably have more chemicals then the stuff you are trying to get rid of.

ReplyDeleteThe waxes and pesticides are horrible in what they do to the taste of the food. Safer too! Accidental ingestion won't kill you but might give you an upset tummy! Thanks.

Good tip! Let me ask you this.. So store the fruits/vege and when your ready to use them follow this procedure so as to prevent rotting ? Or does the spray not affect the fruits/vege's ?

ReplyDeleteJust use it to clean prior to consumption or use in a recipe. Won't stop rot. Just cleans it prior to eating. Wish I knew how to make anti-rot spray!

Stop/reduce the rot/decay in vegetables dramatically by rinsing/spraying a solution of 1/2 cup water and 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide. Drain, cover and refrigerate. Eliminates use of chemical preservatives.Been doing this for years.
