Simple Survival Gear Mods - The Wrap

One of the easiest gear mods that anyone can make is the wrap. Just about anything in your survival kit, GHB (get home bag) or your BOB can be enhanced with the wrap. While paracord is probably the most popular item used for the wrap, things like electrical tape and duct tape are also easy to use to make a wrap. The wrap can also be accomplished with snare wire, fishing line or even dental floss. The trick is to use every available option to give you a better chance of survival. Nobody really knows what seemingly insignificant part of your survival gear may give you the edge you need to survive.

Got wrap?

Staying above the water line!

Good suggestion. For those who don't know how to whip or are unfamiliar with knots there are several YouTube channels, such as AnimatedKnots, TyingItAllTogether, and ITStatical that can teach you the basics. After that, the only limit is your imagination. eg. I have 60' of light cord wrapped around the straps of my backpack. It takes no space and is available without opening the pack.

Riverwalker, I want to thank you for all the information I get from this site. I am making the little EDC's that you wrote about, for Christmas presents. I know they will be well received and I'm having fun making them.
Thank You! Merry Christmas!

I pretty much wrap just about everything with paracord, duct tape, electrical tape, twine and so on.

You just never know when it will be needed.

Thanks.

Excellent idea as a present!

Those small EDC kits can be a lifesaver in a difficult situation. They're also big enough to hold a considerable amount of useful gear.

Thanks and Merry Christmas to you also.

I saw a neat idea (haven't tried it yet but just passing this along) about using a 'ranger band' (cut inner tube) wrapped around the hinged opening of Zippo type of lighters. It is supposed to greatly extend their fuel evaporating and even (purportedly) making them short term waterproof.

I carry a BIC, free standing fuel lighter is very handy too.

May have to try that trick and see how it works.

Duct tape is no doubt the all around must have for every bag. I'm an active backpacker and I have used duct tape to protect my feet from blisters... it's awesome and I've found that virtually all of the hikers I come across are using it, too. In a bug out situation, the last thing you want is to be worrying about a blister and possible infection. When you get a heat spot, stop and put a piece of duct tape over, directly onto the skin, re-sock and go.

I'm like you, I wrap a small length around anything that allows for it. On one trip I came across a pair who's tent was damaged by a falling limb (had a small tear in it) and I gave them some duct tape and fixed it right up!

Duct tape and paracord... never leave home without them! Great article, thanks.

Total agreement on duct tape and paracord...the ultimate essentials.

Thanks.
