Is that one of those 'asps' bugs that hang out of trees and give you a nasty bite if you aren't careful? Its been so long that I've seen one, they hang by threads from limbs and can really ruin your day.
The caterpillar in the picture isn't an asp. I've had a couple of very painful experiences in the past with asps and give them lots of room when I come across one.
Asps are the best known stinging caterpillar in Texas and is one of the most toxic caterpillars in North America. They can cause a severe sting. They are usually found in shade trees and shrubbery and if the hairs come into contact with your skin, they can cause a really bad stinging sensation and rash.
You can recognize an asp quickly by their teardrop shape and their appearance that is similar to a tuft of fur or hair. If you get stung, the effects can last several days before subsiding.
Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
An expedient oxygen absorber for a 5 gallon storage container can be made by placing a golf ball size piece of steel wool and a tablespoon of salt inside a paper napkin and placing it in the container. The salt will absorb the residual moisture and the steel wool will naturally absorb the oxygen.
Preppin' Tips - Recipes
Make Your Own Electrolyte Beverage (Gatorade, Pedialyte, etc.)
To one quart of water add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 8 teaspoons of granulated sugar. Thoroughly mix all ingredients together.
This will replace electrolytes lost by the body due to dehydration caused by diarrhea, vomiting, excessive sweating, etc. A package of Kool-Aid, Crystal Light, etc. may be added to enhance the flavor and color.
