The best security is often
based on keeping things simple. Applying
a few simple guidelines will help you to establish a more secure environment no
matter where you are. Concentrating your efforts on simple security measures
will help create a safer environment for you and your family.
Simple Security Tips
1. Know the enemies of those seeking to violate your
security measures -
One of the most important
things for any type of security is to be aware of the enemies of those who seek
to endanger your security. Don’t give anyone the opportunity to take advantage
of you or your situation. Most thieves and burglars are opportunists. They will
take advantage of any opportunity given to them. Many times this will be to
your detriment. Most will rely on stealth to hide their activities in order to
avoid discovery until they have done their damage. Time and attention are their
main enemies and anything you can do to make it take longer to complete their
activities or that will create unwanted attention will help to increase the
level of your security.
Anything you do that makes
it harder for an adversary will require them to spend more time in order to
subvert your security measures. Being opportunists, they realize that the
longer it takes them to gain access to your home, your vehicle or your
valuables means a greater chance that their activities will be noticed. They
positively do not want any additional attention to their criminal activities.
They will also seek to avoid lighting which may make them more easily seen or
noise from dogs or security alarms that may also create unwanted attention.
2. Don’t make yourself a target -
Too often a breach in our
security is due to our failure to keep our security measures intact. The simple
act of failing to repair a broken lock or to make sure the lock is properly
installed is one such example. Leaving the back door of your home unlocked for
just a few minutes while you make a quick trip to the convenience store may be
all the time someone needs to take advantage of you. Leaving your garage door
open may be a very tempting sight to the wrong person. It only takes a few
minutes for the damage to be done and it may be too late to change the outcome.
You will also need to cover
your tracks if you plan on being gone for an extended period of time. An
overflowing mail box and a stack of newspapers in the yard or driveway serve
only one purpose when you are gone. They make you a target. Make arrangements
with a relative, a close friend or a neighbor to help out in these types of
circumstances. Make sure to offer to provide the same service for them when
they are gone. This will make things safer for everyone.
3. Keep detailed information about your activities
and information private -
Too many times we
inadvertently endanger our security by being too free with information about
ourselves and our activities. Your privacy is an asset and should be treated as
such. There are enough databases in the
world with information about us already without adding extra information that
isn’t required or may not be necessary for someone else to know.
4. Be aware of your surroundings -
Marinating your security is
equally important when we find ourselves away from our home or familiar
surroundings. A certain comfort level in our security can be achieved in
familiar surroundings but will be absent when we find ourselves in strange or
unfamiliar areas. When we are away from our home or familiar surroundings, a comfortable
level of security will be harder to accomplish. It will be important to have an
increased state of awareness of your surroundings in this type of situation in
order to maintain a proper level of security.
5. Check your security measures on a regular basis -
Although decent security
measures won’t make you immune to a desperate or determined individual seeking
to take advantage of you, it will cause many of them to seek easier targets
that are more vulnerable. Check your security on a regular basis for any areas
that could use improvement or that need correcting. Any weaknesses in your
security will often reveal themselves and this will afford you the opportunity
to change or improve your security measures as needed.

My most effective security measure is answering the door with my 1911 strapped to my hip. Follow this by asking Can I help you usually leaves them speechless as they stare at my weapon. Door to door salespeople are a very rare sight in our neighborhood now.
