The pictures above show a magazine tube mounted laser and flashlight on a Mossberg 500A shotgun (12 gauge).

Got tactical shotgun?

Staying above the water line!

To each his own, but if you need a laser on a shotgun to hit a target you probably shouldn't be handling that weapon. A light - absolutely, but a laser is pointless on a shotgun especially in home defense. If you find yourself needed to pull the trigger on a home invader with a shotgun, you could pretty much close your eyes and take out 90% of whatever is in front of the business end. (including walls) I do have a laser/light on my AR but that's a battle rifle meant for medium distances.

Actually Anon 6:36, a laser on a shotgun does make some sense, as regardless if you have gun shouldered or not, the laser points out the impact of your shot load.

And a shotgun is not a howitzer or LAW rocket with beehive round. The assailant will not fly out of the 4' diameter hole created by that shotgun blast. Thats Hollyweird BS.

Rule of thumb is about 1" of spread per yard, so at 7 yards (21 feet), 7 inch of pattern spread or so is expected. So some precision in pointing is required.

Hope this helps.

I also have a light and laser by BSA Stealth Optics mounted on my M&P 15 but the laser is a lot higher intensity with a greater range than the one mounted on my shotgun. While some doubt the value of a laser on a shotgun my results were surprising.

As anonymous 7:30 mentioned, pattern spread even at short distances can be a big factor. For my purposes, I used Remington 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch shells with 1 oz. slugs to sight the laser in and was able to put the slugs consistently on center mass at 50 feet using the laser only after it was sighted in properly. Sighting in the laser was a little tricky as the adjustments were pretty sensitive. This was also done from several different shooting positions without any loss of accuracy.

I also fired numerous slug rounds using only my ghost ring sights with similar results...all rounds being on center mass at 50 feet.

Do I need a laser? Probably not and the same could also be said about my ghost ring sights. But having an extra "comfort zone" works for me. I at least know that in a defensive situation, any threat within 50 feet is going away even if I only get one shot.

I normally practice at distances that are vital to my particular situation. It's about 50 feet from the front of my home to the street and once someone sets foot on my property they will be within a range that I will be able to effectively defend myself if necessary.

Your point was well taken though.

Thanks anon.

You make some excellent points about shot spread. Granted that once someone is in your home the distances will probably be 20 feet or less and the pattern spread may not be that much of a factor.

I personally don't plan on letting them get even that close. Mrs. RW's dog gets very active if a car stops on the street or if she senses something outside and she will alert us quickly to their presence.

Thanks anon.

I plan to do a separate post later about the laser/light mount with more specifics...I generally prefer to test things out first to see if they are viable and work as needed and as intended.

One of the OTHER accessories is an ATI heat shield with integrated ghost ring sights. This actually turned out to be a decently priced gear mod that seems to work well for me so far.

It also has a tactical single point sling which was necessary to avoid interfering with the laser/light mount. More on this later.

Thanks.

The weight of the laser/light mount did help with the recoil some.

I did a previous post about making an improvised shotgun light using an open sight ring and one of those inexpensive LED flashlights...easy and quick gear mod for someone on a tight budget.

Thanks Dean.
