Pocket Survival Kit

Pocket Survival Kit

There may come a time when you will find yourself in an awkward situation when it comes to surviving. Just when you think you’re prepared for anything and everything, you get stuck with just what’s in your pocket. You may be away from your backpack, vehicle or home and find out you’re stuck using just what you have on you. This won’t be a pleasant situation if all you have is pocket change. Simple problems usually have simple solutions if you use a little common sense.

In addition to carrying a decent folding knife in my pocket at all times, there are a few other things that can be essential to your survival and easily carried in your pocket. A button compass, a small mini-tool, a small flashlight, a whistle and a lighter are the few simple additional items that can be carried without being obvious. By using a simple jeans clip on a key ring you can keep several small items in your pocket and have them handy when you need them. They can be easily slipped into a pocket where they’ll be out of sight and not jangling around loose and making noise.

One special note on the above pic of my pocket carry clip, Lil’ RW, my grandson, confiscated my whistle and is checking to make sure it works.

Got pocket survival kit?

I wear Leatherman Wave in pouch on
my belt. Wave is on a lanyard to the
keyring on a carabiner on my belt. On
keyring there is a squeeze light, a whistle, and two small sinkers.
In the elastic pockets of the pouch
there is a magnesium firestarter
(cut in two lengthwise), a small
red/white daredevil, and eight fishhooks
wrapped in plastic that slides in and
out without snagging.

That is a nice little kit there sir - just the essentials. What you might consider adding is a sewing bobbin of trip wire - I found I could wind approximately 60 feet of it on one. Very compact and light, and you can make some repairs on many items you need.

I carry a SOG Crosscut in my truckers wallet, along with a used 11 oz. Capri Sun drink envelope with top cut off - great container to get a drink from a water fountain or other water source. Folds nearly completely flat.

Thanks for the write up.

In the Leatherman Wave pouch there is also 40 ft of Spiderwire braided 50 lb test fishline. It is as thin as BrandX 12 lb test.

Your kit is pretty awesome Vlad. In my locale, I think I would switch out that Dardevle spoon with a small Bass Buster jig. Those jigs work really well when using either casting gear (Mexican Zebco) or even just with a cane pole. Black and chartreuse I believe works better as well.

I guess thinking on it, a spoon is flat enough to include both it and jig, isn't it.

Great set up Vlad. The additional fishing line and other items is a fantastic idea. I've got a Leatherman also with a pocket folder clipped on the outside.

Thanks.

Sounds like a very effective combination you've got there.Hadn't thought of the cut-off drink pouch as a water container...neat idea!

Thanks.

You are welcome sir - hey, I thought of an easy way to secure that bobbin of wire or line to the leatherman sheath itself. I punched a hole in the side of the sheath, and using a Chicago screw, glued the receptor to the back of the spool. The screw goes through the holster on one side, and screws to it and the bobbin on the side. Bobbin does not project beyond edges of sheath at all - cool!
