Riverwalker's Gear - RW's Truck Gun

Did some minor repairs for an individual and came a cross a nice used shotgun that I accepted as payment for a few hours of work and about $15 in parts. Total investment in this shotgun is about $60. It's a New England Firearms 20 Gauge Pardner shotgun. In good used condition, they usually run about $120 to $125. New they can cost around $150 to as much as $160. It was in good condition and had a couple of minor scratches on the barrel but no dents. It did need some cleaning. It also came with a butt cuff...which saved me a few more dollars.

Being a compact model with a 22" barrel and being only 36" in length overall should make it a decent truck gun. It should be easy to maneuver and it doesn't take up much space.

Here are the specifications:

Hopefully, having a modified barrel will keep the amount of "kick" down to a decent level...it's pretty light in weight and has the shorter barrel.

Thanks.

Truck Guns

My hunting buddy called to go grouse hunting with him. He wanted to try out the shot shells he had loaded with his new loader. He was all enthused.

We got in his old Studebaker truck & started down the road when a squirrel jumped in the road from his side & ran up the bank into the woods on my side.

Quick as a wink Norm stopped the truck. Jumped out & fired at the squirrel over the hood of the truck.

The gun just made kind of a popping noise & the shot kind of dribbled out on to the hood.

Norm said to me " kinda wished you hadn't seen that".

Seems like a pretty good choice. Versatile and rugged. One other benefit is that they are relatively inexpensive so a break in would not be to financially punishing.

I tried to be patient and not run out and spend a lot of money for a truck gun. I've been looking for something decent for a pretty good while and came across this compact 20 gauge model and was able to get it in trade for a decent price.

The possibility of a break-in is always a risk you take and as you stated could be financially devastating with a more expensive firearm.

Thanks.

The Rossi combo sounds great...pays to make that first shot count!

Most of my firearms have been gotten by trade or barter for services...not a lot of room in the budget nowadays for new stuff.

Always got my eyes open for a bargain...

Thanks.

Almost as bad as pulling the trigger and realizing you forgot to load a shell in the chamber...

Hate that when it happens.

Very nice buy sir. My brother used a H&R Topper 20 gauge with (iirc) a 26" modified choke barrel for many years until it was stolen from his home, it was a great walkabout gun. A bit stiff on recoil though, south Texas doves hunts were tough on him. Builds character.

He now hunts with 20 gauge Remington semi-automatics and pumps, but noted his shell to kill ratio was better with the single shot. Great reinforcing lesson to young hunters - your 1st shot is the truest.

Thank you for your post.

The opportunity came along to get something that wouldn't ruin the budget and hopefully will work well for the present. The short 22" barrel should make it easy to handle, as far as a truck gun goes.

I used to be quite the dove hunter but the last one to go dove hunting was Mrs. RW. Need to fix that!

I think I'm going to get a real "kick" out of this little shotgun! LOL

Thanks anon!

I have pretty much the same set up that I carry on canoeing expeditions.

I got a chance to check it out on Monday...both RW, Jr. and myself were both off on the same day. I was well satisfied with how it performed and will be posting some pics and a couple of short videos on this. My results showed it will be an excellent performer.

This 20 gauge should work great on canoeing trips...just need a canoe!LOL

Thanks DoubleTapper!
