Raising Poultry - The Benefits

Raising your own poultry does take a good deal of work but with a little persistance you can reap the benefits for you and your family. Yes, they have to be fed and watered and you need a coop to keep them in and a nesting box or two or three stuffed with some fresh hay. But afterwards, you will have one of the most reliable resources for a number of needed items. Raising poultry is a good start to being self reliant.

You will soon start to have plenty of eggs to eat which are also a good source of protein. There will be chicken manure that can be used as a fertilizer and fresh meat available for the pot or frying pan. Raising chickens is a winning proposition. You may even get in a little target practice on any critters trying to get at your chickens if you live in the country.

Got brown eggs?

Staying above the water line!

We have a small chicken tractor in our backyard. Three birds, who give us 9 - 10 eggs per week. Cost of raising them is about the same as buying in the store, but the taste - whoa man, it doesn't compare. Waaay better taste - its worth the trouble man.

In the past hot summer, we give the birds a treat. Wife being a teacher, she stays home during that time with our kids and twice a day, she'd give the birds refrigerated water to drink in heat of the day - they were happy with it.

No trouble, just keeping a 2 liter water bottle in refer and giving them about a coke can at a time, the birds seemed grateful. Egg production continued all summer long, way good for us.

It seems everybody likes a cool drink when it's hot. I do something similar with my dogs by putting ice cubes in their water bowls. It can make a difference. RW, Jr. has a flock of about 4 dozen and we're getting so many eggs each day that we're giving away quite a few to some of our neighbors. Nothing quite like fresh yard eggs! Plus the neighbors appreciate it.

What exactly are you feeding these eggs ? How much did you say food cost for three hens & a rooster or is that just three hens ?

In Canada were aren't legally allowed to raise any kind of farm animals unless we live on a farm or up in the country. This is very unfortunate because I am always trying to become more self reliant. There is a certain sense of satisfaction that comes with raising/growing your own food.

How many chickens do you raise in total & how many eggs do you get per month?

Btw, I've been following your blog for a while! Keep up the great work buddy.

You can check out my site if you have the time, I think its right down your alley:

RW, Jr. has about 43 birds and he gets about 3 dozen eggs a day (when he can find them all!). They don't always lay in the nesting boxes so you sometimes have to hunt for them. The cost with the feed is about the same as store bought but there is really no substitute for the taste of fresh yard eggs. At present, we're allowed to keep a small flock(less than a dozen) in town but they have to be kept caged at all times and we aren't allowed to let them free range, although there are a bunch of chickens wandering around in my neighborhood.

BTW, Checked your site and it looks great! I plan to spend a little time there checking things out more thoroughly.
