Stealth Food Storage - Hiding in Plain Sight

Finding space for your long term food storage is always a problem. Not enough cabinets, drawers, shelves or room in a closet is always a big problem. Sometimes the best way to solve your food storage problems is by hiding it in plain sight. Using common and everyday storage containers can allow you to store additional food amounts without raising eyebrows if the neighbors happen to pop over for a visit. Simple things like a common cooler can make your food storage problems a lot more manageable.

Mrs. RW is a great cook and when she gets in a mood to bake stuff she sometimes goes all out. This usually requires a lot of flour. So to solve that problem we keep an ice chest with a 25 pound sack of flour sitting in the kitchen in plain sight. We’ve had lots of visitors who were completely unaware that it was being used for extra food storage and paid it very little or no attention. It allows easy access to the contents, protects it from excess moisture and is easily moved if necessary to create more room. It even comes with a handle!

This is only one example of some of the ways to hide your food storage in plain sight. Use a little imagination and you can come up with a lot of different ways to solve your storage problems!

Got Stealth Storage?

Great idea - old coolers are a very popular garage sale item and are sold pretty inexpensively, especially if a handle or drain valve is missing or broken. A silicone plug would fill the drain hole with no problem.

Remembered this link from way back - called the Water Bob. If SHTF, bath tubs would become a rarely used fixture, correct? The Water bob is a water bladder that (reportedly) holds 100 gallons of water in your present tub. Essentially a liner that fits in it, you have a pretty good amount of water, kept clean and ready when filled. Here's a link to it:

I think you would have problems repacking it in same box (at least, thats my experience with items like this, lol), could be worth its weight in gold. Can justify the cost in a hurricane kit anyway, potable water is ALWAYS in short supply immediately in the aftermath.

So far, our best stealth storage is our bed. We got a water bed free off craigslist complete with a wood pedestal that has 8 drawers and 5 cupboards. Mrs. Sam made an extra big dust ruffle to cover all that storage.

We use a standard mattress minus the box springs on this. Works like a charm... and it holds a lot of easy-to-get-to preps.

You have that problem too? I thought I was the only one that could never get that tent, tarp, whatever, back in the box!
Sam:
I made a bed pedestal out of milk crate's and a sheet of plywood.
i keep canned food's in it,then a girlie dust ruffle hide's it nicely.

In my part of the country almost everyone has several coolers sitting around in various places and never even give a cooler sitting in the kitchen or utility room a second thought. Thanks.

Surprisingly, most people aren't that observant and normal items that they are used to don't get their attention. Thanks.

I also have a couple that I use to store extra amounts of dry dog food for my security team. Coolers are fairly common items and a couple of extra ones sitting in a utility room, storage shed or garage draw little attention. You can also buy them fairly cheap at garage and yard sales fairly cheap. Thanks.

Great minds think alike! Those little coolers are great and can be used for their intended purpose also. We have several different ones with various items stashed inside. They're so common around here nobody ever notices. Thanks Wyn!

When I started on the log splitter yesterday,it was 105 at around 10 am here.... Flagstaff is gorgeous this time of year too! Used to be a sleepy little ski town, now it's like Jackson Hole or any Colorado ski resort, and pricey!

If your house has a stairway it is likely you have storage area behind a panel of wallboard. Often there is a closet under the stairway but the small area under the lowest stairs is empty. Cut through the wallboard and expose an area that could store a dozen or more 5 gallon buckets.

RW, every one of your downloads that uses that file sharing site is corrupted and unable to be opened when downloaded. You have good info, but if you are unable to share it, what good is it.

I've checked several of the download files and they are downloading OK and I have no problems opening them. If you could be more specific about which downloads you are having problems with, I will try and correct any problems.
