Personal Protection Items - The Safety Vest

While stealth is generally a good thing, there are certain times when you are better off if people can see you and see you well. One of the most common things that happen to people everywhere is a vehicle breakdown. Even in broad daylight it is sometimes difficult to see people who are standing around a vehicle when they are stranded on the side of the road. It becomes even more difficult at night to see people due to limited visibility. One of the simplest and best ways to make sure you are seen by other motorists is to keep a safety vest handy in your vehicle.

Safety vests are compact, lightweight, inexpensive and easily carried most anywhere in your vehicle. A safety vest with reflective stripes will make it easier for other motorists to see you in broad daylight or at night if your vehicle breaks down and you have to make emergency repairs. Even the simple act of changing a flat tire will be a lot safer. It is also a good idea to carry more than one. If you need additional assistance from a passenger or friend they will need one also. Be safe. Be a survivor. Get a safety vest.

Many times you can get a safety vest for free by volunteering for a trash pick-up program in your area.

Staying above the water line!

Nearly every evening I go for a several mile walk about town. This means a walk in the dark for half the year (days are quite short in the north during winter months.

It never really dawned on me how difficult it was for drivers to see me, dressed as I always am in basic subdued colors that help me blend in when in the forest. That is, until driving one night I nearly hit someone who was walking and dressed in a like manner.

In the darkness I couldn't see this person until my car was within a few yards of him.

It is one thing to want to blend in with ones surroundings in the mountains, but another in town - now I wear a vest with reflector tape. It could very well save my life and I can always take it off in need be.

Good post RW. Those are good if you're riding a bike outside.

Excellent point! They can provide an excellent measure of protection for walkers, runners and bike riders.
Thanks for the reminder!

At least they don't take up a lot of space like some other types of gear and really quite useful on an everyday basis. Thanks Jim!

Excellent point about being easy to remove if you don't want to be seen but essential in certain circumstances to prevent being injured or worse yet being killed because someone didn't see you. Glad you now use one! Thanks.
