Camping Gear - Choosing Gear for Survival

In almost any type of survival situation, the gear choices you have made will help to determine whether you will be able to endure the adverse conditions that may be forced upon you in an emergency or crisis. The failure of your equipment can turn a bad situation into a horrible one very quickly. Camping gear which is widely available can offer you the flexibility to meet your survival gear demands.

Most camping gear has evolved over time to be some of the best possible equipment there is available to handle the most extreme environments and situations that Nature can throw at an individual. Most camping gear manufacturers devote substantial amounts of time and energy to making and improving their camping gear to handle these situations so you won’t have to suffer the consequences.

Look for quality and brand name camping gear which has been rigorously tested and engineered to provide the most reliable and dependable service under the extreme conditions that a survival situation could suddenly force upon you or your family. Quality camping gear doesn’t always mean high prices. Many times excellent camping gear can be found on close-out or special sale prices.

Camping gear probably ranks second only to firearms in the amount of research and development that goes into making reliable and dependable equipment for survival.

Everything from tents to cookware, backpacks to rope, cookstoves or lights can be found amongst good camping gear!

But you have to watch out - the miracle of modern advertising is so well honed that companies routinely dupe people into thinking high tech - and often expensive - equipment is needed.

I see this all the time in the mountains - those new to hiking walking around with thousands of dollars worth of the newest gear, while the old hands are wearing rags in comparison.

Guess who climbs the most hills and explores the furthest reaches of the rivers.

Experience trumps gear every time. You cannot buy your way in.

Excellent point! You should never rely on gear as a substitute for skill and experience but as a tool to allow you to use your knowledge and skills to the best of your abilities.I was hoping to bring out the point that if you are going to rely on certain gear you should try to obtain reliable and dependable gear. Just as there are many "high tech" items out there that may or may not be useful, it is also important to remember that there also exists those items of such low quality with little or no reliability that they also would be a waste of money. Thanks.

There are tons of options when choosing the right camping gear. I've been looking for an EDC bag and the one you have pictured is nice, what's the brand?

I use the plain old "Eastsport" fanny packs from Walmart. They can be found at garage or yard sales quite often.

Topics is right, when it comes to wilderness survival new gear isn't necessary. When choosing survival gear functionality and durability are key points. Many old items I have packed for over 10 years still serve me well and I wouldn't ever trade them for the newer versions on the market.

Sometimes its nice to have a brand new pack with all kinds of features but its definitely not a must.. more of a luxury.

Take care,

I have an old tent that I'm rather fond of and still works great. Some of the older stuff works better than the new. Equipment is like tools and is only as good as the skill and knowledge of the user. You can get by without some gear but only if you have the necessary skills and knowledge. Thanks.

At the thrift store I bought several packsacks for $5 or less each. In each I placed a 3x9x14 plastic pan that serves as internal frame, lies flat against my back and has numerous uses in camp.
