Summer Survival - Getting the Point

Getting the Point

Sharp Points

Plant with Sharp Spines

Cactus with Sharp Spines

Wild Mustang Grapes

Mesquite Bean Pods

Whether you're are foraging for wild grapes, berries, or mesquite beans, it always best to remember that they're a lot of plants out there besides poison oak or poison ivy that can cause you a lot of grief. So whenever you're out and about or just checking the trail while on a short hike, you need to be constantly aware of your surroundings.
Note: The above pictures were taken on a relatively short hike I took while checking the trail through the woods the other day and are just a few of the pointy things I encountered.

Staying above the water line!

One of the many hazard's of desert living, everything has a thorn! Be sure to carry a fine tooth comb for the small spike's,tweezer's or plier for the big monster's.I've read, but never tried, for the really fine stuff, smear elmer's glue on and let dry, then peel off, thorn's and all....probably any hair too, but.

That first picture... that's a Bois D'arc ("Osage Orange") sapling?

Bois D'arc (French for bow wood), extremely dense wood and resistant to rotting, burns really hot and was used for making bows and hedge rows and sometimes described as "horse high, bull strong and hog tight".

Everything in the monte stabs, stings or bites - my gosh, Texas is fulla thorns! I like those Gen. Swardchkoff (sp?) fine tweezers - compact and go on a neck chain very easily.

Best to just avoid the pain and misery by watching out for the thorny stuff but a good pair of tweezers wouldn't hurt to have handy!
