The .22LR rifle is a notoriously picky “eater” and doesn’t always like what you feed it! You may need to try a variety of different types and brands of ammo before you find what “flavor” of ammunition it likes best.
The best ammunition to use will probably be any of the high velocity or hyper velocity hollow point .22LR ammunition. The best examples of these are probably the CCI “Stinger” and the Remington “Yellow Jacket” or the new Remington “Cyclones”.
There will probably be a difference in the type of ammo depending upon whether you're hunting varmints or punchin' holes in paper.
Target .22lr ammo? Hunting .22lr ammo?
What do you feed your .22lr rifle?

Ruger 10/22 by all means! Lotsa great part's made for it,reliable as a rock too! I have a fiberforce stock,a huge scope,a few butler creek 25 and 50 rd mags(junk).I have had a lotta jam's using them, but none with the stock 10 rd. I also have a flash hider on it,which I manufacture, (blkcwbyhat @ aol.com),if I can slip in a free plug! I've fed this thing any cheap ammo and it keep's going!

Ruger 10/22 here also. Had pretty good luck with the Remington stuff.
Thanks.

My Marlin 60 seems to be happy with Federal bulk packs. I also have some Champions, but haven't tried 'em yet. Was told they suck....

22lr are great if you can figure out what works best in your gun.
Thanks.

A few years ago, Winchesterbrought out their "Power Point" long rifle load as an improved high-powered hunting round with a 40-grain hollow point as opposed to the usual 36- to 37-grain bullet. The Power Point is listed at 1,280 fps, with 1,001 fps remaining at 100 yards. Energy runs 146 and 89 ft/lbs of energy respectively at those distances I combine this ammo with my Winchester Mode 131 bolt action 22 rimfire an they ombine to a very accurate combination.
Hey RW,
I bought 20k+ rounds of Federal bulk ($13 each at the time) for my 10/22s and pistols. Had some problems at first, then got the Tactical Innovation composite 25 round mags. Still some problems, so I ground the bolt round where it cocks the hammer then polished it. 2700 rounds since then, ZERO prblems. I know its backwards, but I tuned the guns to match the ammo. It still shoots CCI just fine too.

Have used Winchester 22 Magnum "Dynapoints" in my 22 Mag pistol but not any Winchester ammo in my 10/22.

Can you use pretty much any type of .22lr after grinding and polishing the bolt? Or are you pretty much sticking with the Federal ammo only and using CCI occasionally?

I am really glad you asked. I looked it up to refresh my memory. Here is the story:
I set up our 10/22s with long term survival in mind (after we are out of larger caliber ammo). With standard velocity ammo and the Hot Lip 25 round mags I was getting a lot of stove pipes, failure to feeds, and a fair amount of cussin' to boot. With CCI I had fewer problems, but cost is an issue - and still not worth risking my life.
When I got those Tactical Innovation Composite mags my frustration dropped to near zero. Those mags are fully adjustable and built to last. They are made to take apart and clean. A must for all 22 ammo, IMO.
See: http://www.tacticalinc.com/ti25-advanced-composite-steel-magazine-ruger-1022-p-532.html
With the High capacity mag problem solved, then I understood the bolt problems with standard velocity (read: cheap) ammo.
I wanted to stockpile a lot of ammo, so bulk packs it is. My research told me that Federal Bulk HP was the best general purpose, standard velocity, 22 ammo available in the lower price range. So I got a bunch.
The 10/22 likes the higher velocity ammo, but the rifle still needs a bit of lovin' and metal polishing. After I ground the bolt down and polished it, I have 100% reliability (so far 2,700 rounds) with standard velocity ammo and those mags. I added a bolt buffer and tried out some CCI, it seemed to work fine. HOWEVER... Mark White, author of "The Ultimate Ruger 10/22", suggests that you should not do the bolt if you are going to use higher velocity ammo (page 53), but that was written before bolt buffers... I think.
I highly recommend that book to every 10/22 carrying survivalist. Mark makes a number of clever survival rifle suggestions.

The wife ownes 2,...a 10/22 and a Model 60....both will shoot the dirty stuff, I polished and stone both bolts and radius'd the bolt faces,.... but both do better on the stingers........and yes its higher velocity that makes semi-auto 22's keep feeding
To: gott_cha
It seems that they have a tendency to like the high velocity stuff.
Thanks a bunch.
