Shotgun Accesories for Home Defense - Butt Cuffs

For a defensive shotgun, simplicity and reliability are the most important factors. There are several shotgun accessories which can provide the law abiding citizen with an advantage in a home defense situation. These accessories can be added without adversely affecting the simplicity and reliability of your shotgun.

One of the accessories you may want to consider for your shotgun for home defense purposes is a butt cuff. This is a shotgun shell carrier that fits on the buttstock of a shotgun and carries extra shells in 12, 16 or 20 gauge. These are usually made of black nylon and elastic to fit all standard shotgun stocks. Unfortunately they will not fit folding stocks.

A butt cuff which attaches to the shotgun’s stock will conveniently store additional shotgun shells. The shells can then be quickly pulled from the butt cuff and loaded into the shotgun in a “tactical reload.” Additionally, the extra weight from the butt cuff will slightly reduce the recoil of the shotgun. Adding a butt cuff is a simple way to give you an advantage in a home defense situation. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to install on your shotgun.

You can find an example of a cheap and efficient butt cuff here:

It is also good to remember that the single most important thing is practice. Take your shotgun to the shooting range, the farm, or out in the country and fire it regularly. Get comfortable using your shotgun, and become accustomed to the amount of recoil and noise it produces. The above accessory will be helpful, but is not a substitute for skill. Skill only comes through practice, practice and more practice.

Staying above the water line!

Great points sir - those cuffs are especially nice on the single shot shotguns for 'grab 'n go', really handy for that 'behind the back door' varmint gun. I've had good luck with the Beartooth neoprene models - the elastic models stretch too easily and soon get sloppy. Maybe they've improved? Check around and find out more.

I've wondered how hard would it be to make one that has two rows of loops. Or at least make loop deep enough to carry two in same pocket, cartridge rims on top and bottom?

Everybody knows you wear one of those big ammo belt things with about a hundred extra rounds just in case! HaHa! A butt cuff would just be overkill.

As in all things, doing a little research will help you find the best "fit" for your situation. The one I poated about was just an example of an inexpensive type of butt cuff. There are some side saddles out there that can cost as much as your shotgun! The main point was that they are affordable - you could even get one or two extra just in case! Thanks.

Your reaction confirmed my suspicions. The only question now is whether or not you took both ammo belts off or just one! LOL

I've purchased a couple of these over time and the cheap ones that rely solely on elastic don't cut it. They hold the shells fine but tend to slide forward on the gun butt.

I finally got a nice one from tactical taylor and have never looked back. It holds 7 rounds instead of 5 and is held to the weapon by straps so not ridding forward or slipping downwards.
